In the rapidly evolving landscape of the Internet of Things (IoT), the proliferation of connected devices has ushered in unprecedented convenience alongside significant privacy concerns. As these devices integrate more deeply into our personal and professional lives, they collect vast amounts of data, raising critical questions about what information is being gathered, how it is used, and who has access to it. This talk delves into the core of data privacy issues within the IoT ecosystem. We will explore the challenges of maintaining privacy in an increasingly connected world, highlighting the DAMS group's research in employing AI techniques (including Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, and LLMs) to automatically analyze IoT device privacy policies and their network traffic. Our work seeks to unveil the extent of data collection by IoT devices, offering insights and solutions to navigate the complex landscape of digital privacy.
Bio: Roberto Yus is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where he leads the DAMS (DAta Management & Semantics) Research Group. Before joining UMBC, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of California, Irvine. His research interests concern Data Management, Knowledge Representation, Data Privacy, and the Internet of Things. Specifically semantic and privacy preserving data management in IoT environments.
