Mi más sentido pésame por la muerte de tan apreciado Profesor y Compañero de Departamento. Desde la Secretaría del Departamento de Informática e Ingeniería de Sistemas lo vamos a echar muchos de menos

Mis mas sentidas condolencias y mucho ánimo en estos momentos tan duros.

Manolo era sin duda una persona muy querida entre sus compañeros y es considerado un excelente investigador en toda la comunidad internacional. Y, por encima de todo, una excelente persona a quien echaremos mucho de menos.

Cuando llegué desde Granada a Zaragoza en 2008 con una plaza de profesor Ayudante, fui a hablar con él porque no conocía a nadie aquí, y él era conocido de una conocida mía. Me recibió en su despacho con mucha calidez y se ofreció a ayudarme en todo lo que necesitara. Hasta este mismo curso, siempre que nos veíamos por las zonas comunes del departamento me preguntaba cómo me iba, si había estado en Granada, y me preguntaba por las cosas de mi ciudad (la Semana Santa, las habas con jamón...).

Es una enorme pérdida para todos. ¡Un abrazo muy fuerte!

Manolo confió en mí en 1986 (sin apenas conocerme, así que supongo que en quien confió fue en el profesor Miguel San Miguel, con quien yo empezaba a investigar en la Facultad de Ciencias). Me convenció para que echara papeles para una plaza de profesor Ayudante en la Escuela, y para hacer la tesis doctoral con él. Con eso definió de un plumazo mi carrera profesional. Tengo que confesar que al principio yo iba muerto de miedo al otro Campus, pánico de no estar a la altura de su confianza. Gracias a su dirección y paciencia las cosas fueron adelante y aquí sigo. Más de 36 años de enseñanzas recibidas, de compañerismo y de amistad. Y mi caso es uno más de tantos y tantos. Qué suerte he tenido con que me encontrase Manolo en 1986. Y vosotros, Regina, Manuel Guillermo y Alejandro, qué suerte habéis tenido de ser su familia. Siempre en mi memoria. Un abrazo fuerte.

Hoy es uno de esos días tristes en los que la vida te quita una parte importante de tu vida.

Aún no teniendo relación sanguínea con Manolo, le considero una de las personas que más ha influido en mi personalidad y en mi forma de entender la investigación durante los 10 años que estuve trabajando y disfrutando con él en el DIIS .

Siempre una persona íntegra, ética y un incansable trabajador. Recuerdo que cuando trabajaba como su Doctorando la de su despacho era la última luz que quedaba encendida siempre en la primera planta del edificio Ada Byron.

Siempre le estaré agradecido por haberme aportado un granito de su excelencia investigadora que, aunque no fui capaz de finalizar la tesis con él, si me hizo ser una persona a la que le sigue entusiasmando la investigación.

Otro de los recuerdos que tengo son las comidas en el comedor central del CPS con él, en las que acababan siempre juntándose otros profesores del CPS siempre ávidos de escuchar a Manolo contar sus historietas con esa gracia única que él tenía.
Otra de las cosas que recuerdo también son su gusto por las goyescas en los diferentes eventos que organizábamos en el DIIS y que me hizo amarlas a mi también.

En resumen, una persona que ha dejado una huella imborrable en mi vida y que espero seguir recordando con el paso de los años.

Un abrazo enorme para toda la familia y espero que haya donde esté siga enseñando sus Redes de PETRI a todos los que estén por allá. Seguro que les entusiasmará y enamorarán como lo hicieron conmigo.

Quiero expresar mi más sentido pésame a sus familiares y allegados por el fallecimiento del Profesor Manuel Silva.
Desde mi humilde aportación a la investigación, intentaré estar a la altura de su legado.

Querida familia, os envío un inmenso abrazo en estos momentos tan duros. Para nosotros, Manolo ha sido familia, nuestras hijas lo llamaban "tío Manolo" y atesoran con amor infinito los libros que les ha regalado en tantas ocasiones. Se nos ha ido un gran mentor, que tenía todavía mucho que compartir y enseñar a sus discípulos. Una mente brillante y altruista, y excelente persona, querido por todos los que hemos tenido la suerte de conocerlo. Las huellas que ha dejado en nuestras vidas son inconfundibles y no se borrarán nunca. Estará siempre con nosotros, en nuestros corazones. Que descanse en paz.

He tenido la oportunidad de compartir con Manolo 8 años en la Academia de Ciencias de Zaragoza y comprobar su bonhomía y su valía. Son momentos difíciles para todos y especialmente para la familia.

Manuel's death is a great loss. He has been one of the most visible and vocal Petri net researchers and, for many years, a key member of our Petri Net Steering Committee. He introduced Petri nets to the Spanish research community and made Zaragoza the epicenter of the "structure theory for Petri nets". He also helped to promote Petri nets in manufacturing, performance analysis, and discrete events systems. We will miss him. My condolences to family, friends, and colleagues.

Excelente docente, ingeniero, humanista, académico, gestor ... y persona. Creo que todos los que hemos coincidido con él en alguna de sus facetas hemos quedado positivamente impactados. Una gran pérdida para la Universidad de Zaragoza, EINA e I3A, pero una enorme suerte haberlo tenido todos estos años.

Tempus fugit, sí, pero no lo parece cuando se echa la vista atrás y se ven las dimensiones de lo realizado y lo creado, la inmensidad del legado que nos deja, para el que harían falta varias vidas extraordinarias. Aunque a Manolo le bastó con una, tristemente truncada tan pronto, y aún tuvo tiempo para ser, además, cercano, divertido y generoso como pocos. Pero sí, tempus fugit, parece que todo fue ayer, y de repente nos hemos quedado tan solos. Descansa en paz, tu recuerdo nos acompañará siempre.

Over several decades Manuel has been tremendously supportive to the worldwide research community working on Petri nets. In particular, he has made great contributions to the organisation of Petri Nets conference series and the activities of its Steering Committee. He will be deeply missed as a friend and colleague with whom it was always so rewarding to meet and discuss science as well as ordinary life related matters.

I fondly remember Prof Silva as a great human being, caring colleague, beaming with knowledge he shared with kindness and wisdom. He made tremendous contributions to Petri nets and the community. My deepest condolences to his colleagues and family.

I am very sad to learn Manuel's disparition. He was a mentor for our community but also an "excellent friend" with a vast culture and never out of energy. I remember of him since the very beginning of my carrer.

I feel very sad about losing Manuel. He has always been a role model to all of us, as a brilliant mind and most enthusiastic researcher, but also as a wonderful friend, always so warm and accessible!

My most recent memories of talking to Manuel go to the Zaragoza Petri nets conference a few years ago, when I had a pleasure and honour of sitting next to him and his wife at the banquet.

Manuel Silva fue, junto con Jorge Júlvez, mi director de doctorado. Como le dije los agradecimientos de mi tesis, "Gracias a Manolo, que has estado ahí siempre atento, con tu capacidad de abstracción y tu memoria infinitas. Con cuidado de que no nos metiéramos en terrenos demasiado ásperos o que no tuvieran la suficiente relevancia. Siempre planificando y pensando en qué hacer después."
Manolo tenía una mente privilegiada, una capacidad de trabajo exagerada. Tenía muy buena intuición, sensibilidad y una envidiable forma de disfrutar/aprovechar las oportunidades (Entre ellas sus postales de navidad, en las que siempre soñar con un mundo mejor).
Me siento muy afortunada de mi etapa de doctoranda y de haberlos tenido como directores.

Pocos Ingenieros Informáticos de mi promoción lo conocíamos, pero su legado llegó a todos, ya que él fue uno de los fundadores del DIIS, él dirigió la tesis de muchos que luego serían nuestros profesores de informática, y también él puso los cimientos de la Escuela de Ingeniería/CPS (quien por ejemplo ideó los "días de cambio" que tan creativos y útiles nos parecían).

Mis sinceras condolencias a Regi, Manu y Alex, a quienes seguro que la investigación os robó muchas horas, pero a quienes siempre os tenía presentes (y de quienes presumía cuando tenía ocasión). ¡Un fuerte abrazo!

Very sad news! I remember Manuel from several meetings, starting with a PhD defence (Javier Esparza) in Zaragoza, and continuing all through our careers. I remember all those Spanish guys sitting around a table after the defence, eating very nice Spanish food (grilled tomatoes and so on) and Manuel happily joking amongst them. We then met various times during the Basic Research projects DEMON and CALIBAN where I learned about the very nice Spanish work on linear algebra, traps, and all the rest of it, which was influenced very much by Manuel, if not even initiated by him. I also admire very much his ability to attract a bunch of excellent students, many of whom are now in senior positions. I also remember fondly his lectures given in English, some on "passing messages", which sometimes sounded like "passing massages" to my ears. It is only a week ago that I re-read parts of his TCS paper of 1997 because I wanted to know what exactly was the statement there about the realisability of (minimal) T-invariants. Unfortunately now, Manuel must be, and is, sadly missed. My condolences go to his family and to those nearest to him.

I met Manuel in 1986 in Oxford when attending my first international conference and had the chance to discuss with him about my work in such a way that I could improve it.. Since then we had several joint works and every time, I was impressed by his deep understanding of fundamental problems in our field. In addition to be an outstanding researcher, he was very kind and always took care of me during my sojourns in Zaragoza. My condolences go to his family and to those nearest to him.

Dear family of Manuel Silva, this is very sad news to hear that Manuel, a great Petri net scientist who has influenced so many of our academic lifes, has passed away. I still remember meeting him during the Petri nets conference in Japan in 1996 (after reading his many papers for my PhD work), when he invited me to visit his research group in Zaragoza. I took this chance a little later for some months, and still Zaragoza feels like a "second scientific home" for me because of that great time. The research topics and collaborations started by that (and the little spanish that I learned back then) still influence my research work. I will always admire how Manuel was keeping such a friendly and open atmosphere in research collaborations.

I met Manuel in a European project in the early 2000's. Besides being a first class researcher admired by all of us, he was an extremely friendly person, easily accessible to all, with much attention to young researchers and students. I remember long exchanges on our common field of interest : epistemology and the evolution of technologies, where he had significant contributions as an historian and an editor. Meeting casually Manuel in conferences was always a great pleasure. I am extremely sad that this will not happen again.

Manolo me acepto como doctorando en su grupo en 1987, cuando yo acababa de licenciarme en Fisica y no tenia ni idea de Informatica. El me introdujo a la investigacion en general y a las redes de Petri en particular, un area que me fascino y que nunca he dejado de lado. Gracias a Manolo, durante la tesis pude trabajar en proyectos europeos que me abrieron muchas puertas y me permitieron continuar mi carrera en Alemania. Tenia energia y entusiasmo ilimitados. Se va demasiado pronto, pero deja un gran legado. Mi mas sentido pesame para su familia.

We are very sad to learn of the passing away of Prof. Manuel Silva (Manolo for his friends). He was an excellent researcher in many aspects of the Discrete Event Dynamic Systems and specifically in the development of the Structure theory of Petri nets exploited in many application fields.

But for us in Torino, he was a mentor that guided directly and indirectly the growth of our research group interested in the application of Petri nets for the performance and reliability evaluation of computer and communication systems. He was the first colleague who appreciated the mixing of timed and immediate transitions in Petri net models, suggesting however the need of exploiting structural analyses before proceeding with the numerical solution.

During the 80’ many members of our groups in Torino and Zaragoza exchange reciprocal visits that set the ground for an extensive and fruitful period of cooperation from 1990 until 1998, under the umbrella of two European Research Projects. Lately the collaboration continued with individual contacts always with the certainty that we could count on the vast knowledge of Manolo in case of need.

Manolo was also an excellent expert of arts and history and we all remember his erudite explanations during the visits of the Aljaferia castle in Zaragoza.

We will miss him greatly, but his teachings will remain with us.

I feel very sad about the news of Manuel's dead. During my research stays at Zaragoza and during several conferences it has been a pleasure for me to have discussions with Manuel on Petri nets and the development of the field.

Manuel has been a pillar of our research community in the last forty years, has been instrumental in the development of the discrete event systems domain and has been a role model and a guide for scores of younger researchers. He has left, us but his scientific legacy and seminal contributions, his contagious enthusiasm, his limitless intellectual curiosity and his joie de vivres will always be with us.

Manuel has been a mentor and a friend to me since we first met in Troy while I was a PhD student at Rensselaer. We have shared in these 30 years so many activities and enjoyable moments.

My deepest condolences to Regina, Alejandro and Manuel and to all the friends at the University of Zaragoza.

Superfluo ricordarne i meriti scientifici, mi piace ricordare quando, in occasione del suo anniversario di matrimonio, venne in visita da me in Italia e mi chiese di portarlo al porto di Baia, ove era ubicata l'antica base navale dei Romani, presso Napoli. Stava infatti scrivendo un libro sull'arte militare. La sua gioia nel vedere ciò che avete sempre solo letto o immaginato era impressionante, quello sguardo voglio ricordare sempre di lui.

I was so sad to hear this news. You were not only a great researcher but a special man.
My best memories of you are in the WODES conference, with you refusing to talk to me in English and repeatedly speaking in Spanish, assuming I could perfectly understand everything (while of course I did NOT) and telling me with a wide smile “Llámame Manolo!” (Call me Manolo!).

The feeling is a deep sadness for the loss of a loved one, but at the same time it is the moment when the immense fortune of having grown up and shared a large part of my life next to a man like Manuel Silva becomes clear.
